The Plight of Children

This compilation of links to the World Wide Web is intended as an Appendix to Chapter 2 of Volume 55 of Advances in Computers, This Chapter was entitled "The Net, the Web, and the Children," and the links given here are evidence of some of the claims made there which it was not practical to support with formal citations within the Chapter itself.

The compilation is meant only to be illustrative, and supportive of the description in the Chapter of the plight of children around the world. Most of the links are to the BBC news service, which seems to be more stable and thorough than other news services. The compilation is sporadic, being added to when the author's time allows.

The whole issue of digital technology, particularly of the Net and the Web, has profound implications for the lives of children. For some children, the ones that themselves use the products of digital technology, there is one kind of effect. But for children in poor countries, or for the many poor children in rich countries, there is the question of why they are not benefitting from the technology.

Here we will consider the plight of children in four parts:
