| Relational Data Model | A data model created by E.F. Codd in the 1970s |
The relational model is based on the mathematical concept of a relation, which is physically represented as a table.
In 1970, E. F. Codd, at that time a member of the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, published a now classic paper, "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks" (Communications of the ACM 13, No. 6, June 1970), in which he laid down a set of abstract principles that he proposed should serve as a foundation for database management: the so-called relational model. The entire field of relational database technology has its origins in that paper.
The model uses the concept of a mathematical relation - which looks somewhat like a table of values - as its basic building block, and has its theoretical basis in set theory and first-order predicate logic.
The relational model for management of a database is a data model based on predicate logic and set theory.
