Currently TMD utilise a small ASP based system with a Microsoft SQL server backend database to manage the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Computing business unit. This system was developed as a quick and dirty solution based on some freely available ASP source code with the intention to replace with a fully featured system at a later date. This ‘temporary’ system is now 5 years old and in need of replacement. SOP’s are used by staff to undertake tasks for which there is no formal documentation but a known procedure is to be followed. This applies to both business and technical processes.
The project should deliver a replacement for the current system that meets the business needs of the unit using current technologies. TMD utilise HP’s Service Desk software for incident management, problem management, change management and configuration management (see ITIL). An objective of the new system is to integrate or utilise the information contained in the service desk database.
The new SOP system will contain the following 3 major components.
1. A web based interface that must be browser independent, easy to use and navigate around and conform to TMD standards such as look and feel. The front end must allow for the addition and modification and display of SOP’s as a formatted document i.e bold, italics etc. The front end must be customisable so that additional information may be easily added at a later date.
2. The system will have a back end database containing SOP information along with any meta-data and authentication/workflow data. TMD expect the project would develop a new flexible database schema to support changes in the data or format of SOP
3. The systems program logic will provide;
Database: Oracle 10g
OS: MS Windows Server 2003 or Solaris 10 or RedHat Enterprise Linux 4
Web server: IIS or Apache
App server: Tomcat or Oracle App Server (If app server is required)
Web Browser: Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera and Firefox (ie should work with majority of browsers)
IP will be shared between team and client. However, students will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
