As this is a new project just getting off the ground, students would have the opportunity to develop a management system for the project from the ground up. The project data has some complex relationships which needs to be input and from which reports need to be extracted. It would be both challenging & interesting for students and there is probably a lot of data arrangements computer savvy students could suggest.
My name is Lena Pickering and I am the project officer hired to get this project
from concept to operation. Funding as usual is limited and none allotted to
database development. My own experience is in horticulture, administration,
project development and community service. I am very interested in the process
of database development and would be very keen to support students in any way
possible. I attended last years project demonstrations and was most impressed
with the results and with the students’ interest in their products and
the team work that had gone into their development.
My own project ‘Still Gardening’ is a new project and is a unique
way of promoting healthy activity in the older age group and people with disabilities,
combined with befriending and practical support in the garden. It aims to match
volunteer Garden Mates with older people and people with disabilities to help
them in the garden. It also aims to do some conversions to the garden like a
raised garden bed for people with bad backs for example, or people who can’t
reach the ground from a wheelchair. A third aim is for volunteer speakers to
raise awareness about the concept of low maintenance gardening.
Some of the data needing to be recorded and reported on for this project are:-
• Recruitment of 2 types of volunteers – Garden Mates & Peer
Educators
• Records for Garden Mates, Peer Educators, Clients, Community Groups,
Community Services
• Training modules undertaken and yet to be undertaken by volunteers
• Matching process for Garden Mates & Clients based on a range of
client & volunteer attributes & preferences such as suburb, age, gender,
interests, experience, personality, transport, garden interest
• Records of Garden Mates’ weekly visits
• Matching of Peer Educators with Community Groups, as well as presentations
booked and completed
• Records of referring agencies
• Lists of suburbs where Garden Mates service & Peer Educator service
operate
• Clients who have had garden conversions
• Client waiting list
• Volunteer waiting list
• Mailing lists
• Case notes
A confidentiality agreement is required.
