The Learning Resource Management System is a planned software product which
will aim to generate digital education resources for delivery to students.
Comprising of an administration and client access system, the purpose of the
software will be to collate a variety of multimedia documents including written
material, pictures, video, audio and interactive tools for into packages for
delivery to students in a variety of media formats. The aim is for qualified
trainers to prepare comprehensive training packages for delivery either in person
or online.
Key requirements for the system to include:
- Efficient storage and cataloguing of digital multimedia files of a variety
of formats.
- The ability to collate a variety of multimedia documents as a discrete training
package in the system. (eg Powerpoint slides, a video, several scanned handouts,
PODcasts or similar represented as a package).
- The ability to effectively search individual multimedia files and packages
by a variety of parameters
- The ability to export training packages in a variety of formats, For example:
o PowerPoint slides (in handout format), scanned documents and several web pages may be exported as one PDF file
o PodCast, avi format film and PDF file may be exported as a single self-extracting compressed file.
- A desktop based administration module for administration of content.
- A PHP/MYSQL based client module for electronic access to content.
- A user/permission based security system to limit client access to specific
material as required.
Potential market
We believe there is a potential market for this product to any educational institution
delivering material. Currently whilst many products do exist they are either
based on proprietary training materials, or do not effectively manage the collation
of multiple formats as a discrete package that is easily accessible by clients.
If you chose to undertake this project you are welcome to explore and take advantage
of anyone who is interested further developing this software on a commercial
basis.
We prefer to develop software material using Open Source Development languages and tools such as Apache/PHP/MySQL and Linux. We are able to provide access to development hardware and example data as required. We are open to the possibility of working with Microsoft based systems already in use in our organisation including Microsoft Server 2003, Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL server. We have the potential support systems developed in proprietary languages such as Visual .NET however we do not have access to equipment or software development tools for you to use in this project.
Client retains irrevocable right to use any source code, software or documentation developed in the project for further use and development within the organisation, but not for commercial sale. Client does not wish to limit the students ability to market or profit from any product developed. A confidentiality agreement will be required.
