About Medication Errors Reporting
System
Accidents happen even in hospitals,
an electronic system needs to be developed to record these accidents
and near misses so that processes can be changed or put in place to
prevent them happening again.
The project involves the
development of a new database capable of storing information about
medication administration errors and near misses. A query system
also needs to be developed so that analysis can be performed on
the data. The system should also be updatable, so that as circumstances
change different data can be recorded and analysed.
Currently nurses record
the errors on paper and include information such as the date, time,
type of error, description of what happened and why, and suggestions
for preventing it from happening again. A system needs to be developed
so that nurses can input this information directly into a central
database. The system needs to be very quick and easy to use as nurses
are always very busy. The system needs to be intelligent, it needs
to remember frequently entered information to minimise typing required
of the nurses.
A query system also needs
to be developed so that administrators can analyse the data to discover
what type of accidents are happening frequently and why and put
processes in place to prevent them continuing. This system also
needs to be easy to use as the users are not using computers all
the time.
