About Me Research Project Title:
Augmented Reality as a Training Tool for Wound Field Management

Summary:
Augmented Reality (AR) technology has great potential as a training tool in a wide range of fields. My research investigates the usefulness of AR Technology to Nurse Training in the area of Wound Field Management. A major problem facing wound care educators is teaching students the importance of maintaining sterility of the wound field and equipment (forceps, dressings etc). Students often have difficulty keeping track of which objects are sterile and non-sterile, and what actions will cause contamination. It is infeasible for educators to supervise every student for any length of time to identify these errors as they are made. The proposed system will attempt to use AR to provide this feedback loop.

Under the proposed system, Nursing students wear a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) that utilises a video-see-through view as they interact with real wound-care tools found in a standard dressing pack. The system tracks their actions and indicates sterile and non-sterile areas using colour overlays. Thus students are immediately made aware of contamination events as they occur. Providing this continuous feedback loop should enable students to build a better "mental model" of the interactions, helping them develop a deeper awareness of the contamination problem. The system will be tested with second-year students from the School of Nursing and Midwifery in semester 1, 2010.
