Student Lab Closures Over Summer

Most of the CIS computer labs in Hobart and Launceston have now been closed until semester 1, 2010.

TASICT Technology Presentation

TASICT and the TCCI are presenting a technology presentation on Thursday evening, November 12. The evening will feature two industry experts (Michael Ossipoff of Telstra, and Geof Hayden of Alcatel-Lucent) speaking on a range of poignant ICT issues and identifying ways to leverage the NBN opportunity in your business.

The presentation will be held at the Wrest Point Function Centre. Please see the attached flyer (PDF) for times, costs and bookings.

CSIRO Honours and Postgraduate Scholarship Program

The CSIRO has announced both Honours and Postgraduate Scholarship Programs for 2010. Prospective students may apply by completing the application form available under the relevant research area on the CSIRO Careers site. Applications close November 30.

Ubuntu 9.10 Now Available

The latest releases of Ubuntu Linux (9.10, Karmic Koala) is now available for burning in the School's labs. There are three versions available - i386 Server, i386 Desktop, and i386 NetBook.

On Macintosh systems, choose the "CD+DVD ISO Images" link in the Shortcuts folder of the Dock. Instructions for burning the images are in a text document inside this folder.

On PCs, select "Start->Computing Resources->CD Images on huntley" (Hobart), or "Start->Computing Resources->CD Images on liffey" (Launceston) to mount the share. Instructions for burning the images are posted on the lab walls, and in a PDF document inside the share.

ATSE Cloud Computing – Competition and Internships

A working group of the Australian Academy of Technological Science is calling for proposals advocating novel applications of computing clouds answering the question: how could a cloud platform be used to solve a previously intractable problem or to deliver services in a new and scalable way? Applications may be from a wide range of endeavours, spanning government, research, education, Internet businesses, and industry.

The selected proposals will be offered a paid summer internship with a member organisation, and provided with supervision, equipment and access to a variety of cloud services.

System Downtime Notice

Monthly backups will be carried out on a number of the School's systems in Hobart and Launceston on Sunday, November 1, at the following times:

- Hobart: 7:00am until 11:00am (alacritas)
- Launceston: 7:00am until 11:00am (lawson)

These activities will affect the listed Unix servers, and samba shares on lawson and alacritas (this includes the "M:" drive on Windows lab machines).

Introduction to the Computing & IS Honours Programs in 2010

This Thursday, October 15, the School will be holding an introductory session on the Computing and IS Honours programs. If you think that you might like to study the honours program with us at some stage then please try to attend this meeting. If you cannot attend but would like more information please either contact Jacky Hartnett (J.Hartnett@utas.edu.au) or Judy Young (Judith.Young@utas.edu.au).

The session will be held in the School's Seminar Rooms (473 in Hobart, V137 Launceston) at 1pm, and will include time for questions and answers, and an informal chat with staff and past honours students over a pizza lunch.

If you're interested in attending, please RSVP to School Office to ensure sufficient pizza is provided - Andrea Kingston (Andrea.Kingston@utas.edu.au) for Hobart attendees, and Julia Mollison (Julia.Mollison@utas.edu.au) for Launceston attendees.
