The Master of Computing by Coursework degree is a postgraduate course of advanced study in computer science and software engineering for Computing graduates, with a final year credit average, wishing to enhance computing skills, explore current technologies, and research future applications.

Structure of the Master of Computing (MComp)

Students will undertake one and a half years of study (three semesters) to complete eight postgraduate coursework units and a dissertation equivalent to four units. Students may be required to undertake a two-year program which includes one semester of four advanced undergraduate units as foundation studies.

Thesis

Students undertake the equivalent of one full semester of applied research leading to the presentation of a dissertation. The topic will be on a subject of interest to the student and a member of academic staff.

Start Dates

There are two semesters each year at the University of Tasmania and each semester has thirteen teaching weeks. First semester starts late February and continues until June and second semester starts early July and continues until November. You can begin your Masters program in first or second semester. The course is normally offered internally at the Launceston campus.

As part of student training, and to provide extra financial assistance, the School of Computing and Information Systems offers part-time tutoring employment to selected post-graduate students.

English Language Requirements

The minimum English language competency requirement for postgraduate study is no band less than 6.0 in IELTS, or 233 in Computer Based TOEFL (equivalent to 575 in TOEFL), including 4.5 for written English, or a substantial proportion of prior education undertaken in English. Applicants may enrol in an English language course conducted on the University campus.
