The Bachelor of Computing with Honours degree is designed for people who already have a Bachelor of Computing degree, Computing Major or equivalent qualification, who wish to develop their research skills and obtain more detailed knowledge within the Computing field.

A Computing Honours degree opens doors to a wide range of interesting careers and gives you much more control over your future career development. You could obtain work in IT research for private companies, government and semi-government organisations, or in academia. Skills and knowledge developed during the Honours degree have led to much more rapid career progression for many previous graduates.

A Pathway to Research Higher Degrees

The Computing Honours degree is the primary avenue for entry into a Research Masters or PhD qualification in Computing.

Start Dates

There are two semesters each year at the University of Tasmania and each semester has thirteen teaching weeks. First semester starts late February and continues until June, and second semester starts early July and continues until November. The Honours programme may commence before the standard undergraduate semester start date. You can begin your Bachelor of Computing with Honours programme in first or second semester.

The course is offered internally at the Launceston and Hobart campuses. It is most commonly studied full-time over one year, but may be taken as a two-year part-time course.

A Typical Course Structure

Full-time over one year (two semesters) students will complete four advanced coursework units, a series of research workshops, and they will produce a thesis on the chosen research topic.

All students are informed of potential thesis topics at the start of the honours year. Currently, School of Computing and Information Systems research is undertaken or proposed in the following areas:

Financial Assistance

There are a number of Honours Scholarships offered by the University of Tasmania, (see the Scholarships page on the University Website).

Government support during undergraduate studies may be extended for the honours year.

Some employment in part-time tutoring may be offered.

English Language Requirements

The minimum English language competency requirement is 6.0 in IELTS or 213 in Computer Based TOEFL (equivalent to 575 in TOEFL), including 4.5 for written English, or a substantial proportion of prior education undertaken in English. Applicants may enrol in an English language course conducted at the University.
